Motto: शं नो वरुणः (Sanskrit)
Sham No Varunaḥ meaning ‘May the Lord of Water be auspicious unto us’

Like in the Indian Army we have Field Marshal as honorary rank, in the same way, in Navy, we have Admiral of the fleet as honorary rank.

Brief History of Navy
The Indian Navy traces its origins back to the East India Company’s Marine which was founded in 1612 to protect British merchant shipping in the region. In 1793, the British East India Company established its rule over the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent i.e. Bengal, but it was not until 1830 that the colonial navy was titled His Majesty’s Indian Navy. When India became a republic in 1950, the Royal Indian Navy as it had been named since 1934 was renamed to Indian Navy.
Pandayas has the supreme command while the Marathas were renowned for Naval fleet.

Why Do We Need Indian Navy

So a simple answer to this question is to safeguard the interest of the Indian economy overseas against the terror made by the enemy countries and to help in maritime trade.

But In an explained way, our Navy plays a vital role in four aspects.
1. The Military Role: This includes the application of maritime power in both offensive operations against enemy forces, territory, and trade and defensive operations to protect own forces, territory, and trade.
2. The Diplomatic Role: Naval diplomacy entails the use of naval forces in support of foreign policy objectives to build bridges of friendship and strengthen international relations.
3. Constabulary Role: In this role, the forces are employed to enforce law of the land or to implement a regime established by an international mandate. The protection and promotion of Indian maritime security are the prime responsibilities of the Indian Navy.
4. Benign Role: Benign trade includes Humanitarian Aid, Disaster relief, Search and Rescue(SAR) Ordinance Disposal, Diving Assistance.
